Launch of Virtual Educa and Upcoming Events
Santo Domingo. March 22th, 2007.

The General Secretary for Virtual Educa, Dr. José María Antón spoke of the first steps taken which eventually began the institution he currently directs. He also detailed the next events of the Inter-American organization.

He stated that Virtual Educa began at the beginning of the XXI century with the support of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the then Secretary for Iberoamerican Cooperation (now known as the Iberoamerican Secretary General), which has its headquarters in Madrid.

He expressed that the with support of these two institutions, Virtual Educa has emerged in order to establish the Inter-American and Ibero-American and that it is the only program that shares the organisms of the Inter-American and Ibero-American system.

Dr. María Antón addressed how Virtual Educa is slowly transforming and spoke of the summit in San José, Costa Rica, in a program appointed to the Iberoamerican Conference for Governments and Heads of State. The event was attended by President Leonel Fernández who signed the agreement.

Those gathered at the event stated that Virtual Educa is a program that they support because they believe in the importance of applied technology in the education sector.

Pillars of Virtual Educa

Dr. Antón pointed out that diverse multilateral organizations, governmental organisms, universities, private companies and civil society are pillars of Virtual Educa. He also added that Virtual Educa brings together these four factors which represent the excellent progress humanity has made regarding sustainable development and social cohesion.

At the beginning of the XXIst century they decided to launch an educational, training and innovative project in cooperation and development.

“We decided to launch it this way with the concept of innovation and development and not directly within a governmental framework, which is made up of other mechanisms. Sometimes mistakes are made in innovation, other things may go badly others very well but one learns from these experiences,” added Dr. Antón.

Once Virtual Educa was set up, OAS and the Iberoamerican Secretary General offered their support.

Antón also spoke briefly about Virtual Educa 2007, which will take place in San José dos Campos from 18th – 22nd June 2007, under the heading: “Education, Training, Innov@tion and Development: New Challenges, New Possibilities”.

Some of the main areas of the event are: The Role of Universities in the Society of Knowledge, School of the Future, Professional Training, Innovation and Employment, TIC’s, Integration and Development.

Natasha Despotovic, Executive Director of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development, based in Washington D.C. welcomed Dr. Antón after officially inaugurating the event.
